POPE JOHN PAUL II was born in 1920 in the small town of Cracovia (Poland). Karol Wojtyla was named Pope in 1978 on the death of John Paul I. The early years of his papacy saw him win hearts across the globe. His charisma shone through during countless overseas visits and in interviews with heads of governments and religions. Upon his death in 2006, he was succeeded by Benedictus XVI.
